The grand estate of the Sterling family sat at the end of a winding private drive in Connecticut. To the outside world, David Sterling was a young billionaire real estate mogul who had everything. He had wealth, power, and a gorgeous wife named Victoria who wore ruby red satin gowns to charity galas. But inside the cold marble hallways, life was very different for the staff who worked there.
Clara had been hired three months ago to help look after six-month-old Leo. She was a young woman with a soft voice, kind eyes, and a heart full of love for the sweet baby. Clara had taken the job because she needed to support her younger sister after their parents passed away. The pay was good, but the atmosphere inside the estate was heavy with fear.
David was constantly traveling for business boardrooms, court hearings, and real estate investments. Whenever he stepped out the front door, Victoria's polished facade completely vanished. She treated the servants like trash, throwing coffee cups at the walls and screaming over minor mistakes. But what broke Clara's heart was how Victoria treated little baby Leo.
Victoria had married David for his massive fortune and his family trust fund. She wanted the status of being a mother, but she hated the reality of it. When Leo cried, Victoria did not comfort him. She found him annoying, often locking his nursery door or scolding him harshly. Clara did everything she could to shield the baby, staying up all night just to keep him safe and happy.
One sunny Tuesday afternoon, the air inside the mansion was thick with tension. David had just left for the airport to handle an emergency lawsuit in New York. The moment his luxury car pulled out of the driveway, Victoria's face turned cold. She walked into the nursery wearing her designer heels and a blood-red dress, looking for something to vent her anger upon.
Leo was sitting on his play mat, softly gurgling with a plastic toy. Victoria snatched the toy from his tiny hands and threw it across the room. The sudden noise terrified the infant, and he burst into loud, frantic tears. Instead of picking him up, Victoria grabbed the baby by his tiny wrist and pulled him across the marble floor toward the hallway.
Clara heard the crying from down the corridor where she was folding laundry. She dropped the towels and ran out into the hall. Her heart stopped when she saw Victoria dragging the terrified infant across the cold, slick tile like a piece of luggage. Leo was screaming in pain and terror, his little legs kicking helplessly against the hard stone.
"Stop! Please, ma'am, stop!" Clara cried out, running as fast as her legs could carry her. She threw herself between Victoria and the infant. "You are hurting him! Please let him go!"
Victoria glared at the maid with absolute venom. Without saying a word, she raised her heavy hand, adorned with diamond rings, and slapped Clara forcefully across the face. The strike was so hard that Clara stumbled back, her cheek instantly swelling and turning a dark shade of blue. Tears filled Clara's eyes, but she refused to step away from the crying baby boy.
