The garden was dead silent except for the fluttering of the US flag in the background. Mark stood frozen between his father and Hannah, his brain struggling to connect the dots. “Miss Vance?” Mark repeated, his voice cracking with confusion. “Why did you call her Miss Vance? Her last name is Miller! She works at a public middle school!” He looked from Sterling to Hannah, searching her face for an answer, but Hannah just looked back at him with cool detachment.
Richard Sterling turned around slowly to face Mark and his father. He opened his leather briefcase and pulled out a thick parchment document stamped with a red wax seal. “Hannah is the sole biological daughter and primary beneficiary of Arthur Vance's original estate,” Sterling announced calmly to the entire crowd. “The late Arthur Vance was your grandfather's older brother, Mark. The man who actually founded the original land holdings this entire property sits upon before he passed away twenty years ago.”
Margarethe gasped loudly, her hand flying to her throat as her face went completely white. “That's impossible!” she shouted, stepping forward angrily. “Arthur Vance died without an heir! The court declared his estate abandoned twenty years ago! My husband inherited everything legally through the corporate board!” She looked toward her husband for support, but the elder Mr. Vance was sinking back into his chair, his hands shaking violently as he realized the truth.
“Arthur Vance did not die without an heir,” Sterling replied firmly, holding up a certified copy of a DNA test along with an official adoption decree. “When Arthur's daughter was born during his second marriage, he placed her in a private protective trust to shield her from family corporate battles until she turned twenty-five. Hannah was raised by her adoptive parents under the name Miller to ensure she grew up with real values, away from greedy relatives who tried to steal her trust fund.”
Hannah looked at Mark's stunned face. She remembered how Mark had boasted about his family's wealth when they first met, how he had warned her that his parents would demand a strict prenup so she wouldn't take his family's money. She had stayed quiet back then, wanting to be loved for who she was, not for the massive real estate trust waiting for her in a San Francisco bank vault. She had wanted to surprise Mark on their wedding day by transferring the entire estate title into both their names as a gift. But today, his true nature had been exposed.
“You... you owned the mansion?” Mark stammered, his eyes wide with horror as he realized what he had just lost. “The estate, the land, the holdings... it's all yours?” He reached out toward Hannah, his voice desperate and full of regret. “Hannah, baby, I didn't know! If I had known what my stepmother was planning, I would have stopped her! I swear I would have protected you!” Hannah looked at him with pity, stepping backward away from his reaching hand.
