The Master Returns Home

Elena stood at the top of the grand staircase, holding the baby tightly. Clara was marching down the hall after them, her heavy heels clicking loudly on the hard floor. The woman had dropped all acts of grace and was coming at Elena with wide, menacing eyes. Elena looked down the stairs, trying to decide if she should run out the front door into the driveway or lock herself in the butler's pantry.

Just as Clara reached out to grab Elena's arm again, the massive front double doors of the mansion were pushed open with tremendous force. The heavy wood slammed against the interior walls, echoing like thunder through the entrance hall. Footsteps pounded against the stone floor as a tall man stepped into the foyer, his expensive coat dripping with light rain from outside.

It was Julian Vance. He had finished his legal meetings early and had returned home sooner than expected. He looked up toward the landing and saw his wife, his maid, and his baby in a tense, chaotic standoff. His eyes quickly swept across the scene, taking in Elena's bruised cheek, Clara's angry posture, and the heartbreaking sound of his son's loud crying.

Julian: What happened to my son?

Julian's deep voice boomed through the high ceiling, filled with immediate authority and concern. He dropped his briefcase onto the floor and took the stairs three at a time, his face pale with sudden fear. Clara's expression changed in an instant. The rage on her face melted away, replaced by a fake look of deep sorrow and shock.

Clara: Oh, Julian! Thank goodness you are home! The maid has gone completely insane! She hit me and tried to steal the baby from his crib!

Elena's jaw dropped at the shameless lie. But she did not let fear freeze her tongue this time. She stepped right past Clara and met Julian at the middle of the landing, holding the baby out so his father could see him clearly in the bright light of the hallway chandelier.

Elena: Don't listen to her, Mr. Vance! Look at his face, sir! Look at what your wife just did to him!

Julian stopped in his tracks. He lowered his gaze to his baby boy. The red marks on Leo's cheek and chest were swelling, clearly shaped like the heated edge of an iron. Small blisters were beginning to form on the baby's soft skin. The sight was horrific, a clear image of deliberate cruelty that no accident could ever explain.

Julian: My God... Leo... What is this?

Elena: I caught her in the nursery, sir! She had the clothes iron heated up! She was holding it right against his skin! She said he wouldn't stop crying, and she was trying to hurt him so you would spend your time taking care of him instead of managing his trust fund!

Clara rushed down the steps, her voice pitched high and hysterical as she reached for Julian's arm, trying to pull his attention back to her.

Clara: She's lying, Julian! The iron fell off the board by accident! I was trying to save him, but Elena rushed in and attacked me! You know how faithful I have been to you! You can't believe a common maid over your own wife!
