The sound of distant police sirens echoed through the long driveway outside the grand estate twenty minutes later. Julian remained on the floor with Clara, keeping her wrapped in his coat to keep her warm and calm. Paramedics soon rushed through the double front doors with emergency equipment ready to check the pregnant woman.
Evelyn had walked down the grand stairs slowly, holding her silver reading glasses in her hands calmly. She stood near the large American flag on the foyer wall, acting like a refined home owner dealing with unwelcome guests. Two police officers entered right behind the paramedics, their uniforms neat and their faces serious.
Officer Davis: What happened here? We received an emergency call about an assault.
Julian: My stepmother pushed my pregnant wife over that balcony rail!
Evelyn: That is a complete lie, Officer. My daughter-in-law lost her balance and fell.
Clara: She lunged at me because I found proof she stole our inheritance!
Evelyn: They are trying to extort money from my late husband's legitimate estate.
The officers looked between the angry young man, the pale pregnant woman, and the calm older stepmother. One paramedic knelt down beside Clara, checking her blood pressure and checking the health of her baby. Clara cried softly as the paramedic gave a gentle nod to Julian, confirming the baby was okay.
Julian stood up slowly, making sure Clara was comfortable on the paramedic's soft stretcher first. He walked over to the scattered papers lying across the dark marble floor of the grand foyer. He picked up several white sheets that contained financial tables, bank stamps, and official legal signatures.
Julian: Read these papers, Officer. These are offshore bank accounts under her name.
Officer Davis: Let me see those documents right now, sir.
Evelyn: Those are private business records stolen from my home office upstairs!
Julian: They belong to my father's trust fund! She moved five million dollars yesterday!
Evelyn's face finally lost its calm expression as the police officer carefully scanned the legal papers. She took a step back toward the grand staircase, her hand reaching for her mobile phone inside her jacket. The second police officer stepped into her path immediately, blocking her from leaving the bright foyer area.
The papers detailed a massive fraud scheme that Evelyn had been running since Julian's father died in hospital. She had forged signatures, created fake shell companies, and slowly drained the family business of all its cash. Clara had hired a private investigator to track down the hidden bank accounts earlier that month.
Officer Davis: Ma'am, these documents show illegal transfers from a trust fund in his name.
Evelyn: My lawyer will explain all of that! This is a simple family dispute!
Julian: You pushed her because you knew these papers would put you in prison!
Evelyn: She took them without permission! She broke into my private study!
Clara: You gave me the keys yourself yesterday when you asked me to bring files!
Evelyn clenched her fists tightly as her smooth story began falling apart under police questioning. The officers looked up at the balcony railing, measuring the height of the fall with their experienced eyes. They could see fresh scuff marks on the floor right near the top edge of the marble landing.
Julian walked back to Clara's side, holding her cold hand tightly while the paramedics prepared to take her to the hospital. He felt an intense combination of relief and burning anger inside his heart. His wife was alive, but the battle against his stepmother was only just beginning in earnest.
