The morning sun was shining bright over the grand estate. White roses lined the marble patio leading down to the sparkling blue pool. Everything looked like a scene from a dream wedding magazine, but the mood in the air was cold. Jessica adjusted her expensive white lace wedding dress as she stood near the edge of the patio. Her hair was styled in perfect curls, and a glowing diamond ring sparkled on her left finger. She looked down her nose at the staff working hard to setup the outdoor party. Mark was inside the main house finishing his suit, unaware of what was happening outside.
An older woman named Elena walked slowly across the smooth marble floor. She was wearing a faded grey maid uniform that had seen better days. Her hands were worn from years of hard physical work, and her graying hair was pulled back tightly into a bun. Elena carried a heavy silver tray loaded with crystal champagne glasses for the wedding guests. She moved carefully because her knees were aching in the heat, but she wanted everything to be right. She had worked at the estate for several months through a local house cleaning agency.
Jessica blocked Elena's path suddenly, turning her back on the beautiful view of the backyard pool. She looked at the older woman with a sneer of deep disgust. Jessica had always looked down on working people, especially today when she felt like a queen. She pointed a sharp, polished fingernail at Elena's tray, making the glasses rattle together loudly in the quiet garden. Elena stopped instantly, her heart beating fast inside her chest as she lowered her head politely.
Jessica: You missed a spot on these glasses. Are you completely blind or just lazy?
Elena: I am so sorry, ma'am. I will take them back to the kitchen immediately and clean them again.
Jessica: No, you won't. Look down at my shoe. You bumped into me and got dust on my satin heel.
Elena looked down at Jessica's expensive designer shoes. There was barely a speck of dust on them, but Jessica was scowling like her entire dress had been ruined. Elena felt a lump form in her throat. She did not want any trouble on this important day. She knew how rich families operated, and she needed this job to pay her monthly rent and medical bills. So, without saying another word, Elena slowly set the heavy silver tray down on a side table.
She lowered her tired body down onto the cold white marble floor. Elena knelt right at Jessica's feet, holding a soft white cloth in her trembling hands. Jessica stood tall above her, holding her gown up slightly so it would not touch the ground. She looked down at Elena with pure disgust, enjoying the power she held over the older woman. Other workers in the garden paused their work, watching the cruel scene in complete shock, but no one dared to speak up against the wealthy bride.
Jessica: Make sure you get every single mark off. My father paid ten thousand dollars for these heels, and I will not let a messy maid ruin my walk down the white aisle today.
Elena: Yes, ma'am. I am wiping them as quickly as I can.
Jessica: Hurry up! You are taking way too long, and your dirty hands are getting near my lace dress.
Elena kept her head down, carefully wiping the smooth leather of the heel. Tears welled up in her faded eyes, but she forced them back. She had suffered through much worse things in her long life, but the humiliation felt sharp today. She wished her son was here to see how hard she worked, but she had never told him about her job at this specific house. She wanted him to focus on his own career and happiness without worrying about her financial struggles.
