A Push Toward the Pool

Jessica grew impatient as the seconds ticked by on the patio clock. She kicked her foot slightly, knocking the cloth straight out of Elena's frail fingers. The small white cloth drifted across the slick marble toward the edge of the swimming pool. Elena gasped softly and reached out on her hands and knees to grab it before it fell into the water. The pool was filled with deep, sparkling blue water right next to where they stood. Jessica chuckled under her breath, watching the old woman crawl across the stone ground like a beggar.

Jessica: Look at you crawling around. You look absolutely ridiculous right now.

Elena: I just need to get the cloth, ma'am. Then I will leave you alone.

Jessica: You should have stayed in the kitchen where you belong with the rest of the lower help.

Jessica stepped closer to Elena, her high heels clicking loudly against the polished floor. Instead of letting Elena stand up safely, Jessica leaned forward with a mean smile on her face. She raised her hand and gave Elena a sharp, sudden shove right between her shoulders. Elena lost her balance instantly on the slick surface. She let out a loud cry of shock as her body tipped backward over the edge of the deep blue water.

A massive splash echoed across the entire estate grounds as Elena hit the pool surface. Water shot up into the air, soaking the white flowers and the edge of the patio deck. Elena went under the deep water for a terrifying second, struggling against the heavy weight of her thick grey uniform. She gasped for air as her head broke the surface, flailing her arms to stay afloat near the concrete wall. Jessica stood at the edge, laughing out loud while holding her lace dress back so it wouldn't get wet.

Jessica: Oops! Watch your step next time! Maybe the cool water will help you wash those filthy hands!

Elena: Help! Please, I... I can't swim very well in these heavy clothes!

Jessica: Oh, stop crying like a baby. It is just water. You will survive.

Inside the main house, Mark was standing in front of the mirror fixing his silk tie. He heard the sudden loud splash and the sound of someone screaming in terror outside. His heart dropped into his stomach instantly. Mark was a self-made businessman who had built his own real estate company from the ground up. He was marrying Jessica because he thought she was a sweet, caring woman who shared his strong family values. He ran toward the glass doors leading to the patio deck.

He pushed the heavy glass doors open and ran onto the white marble floor in his dark business suit. The guests who had arrived early were pointing and whispering in horror near the pool. Mark saw Jessica standing near the water with a cruel smile on her face. Then his eyes drifted down into the splashing water, and his entire world completely shattered. He recognized the grey uniform, the graying hair, and the familiar face fighting to keep above the deep water.

Mark did not hesitate for a single second as he charged forward across the wet marble. His dress shoes slipped slightly, but he kept his balance through pure anger and adrenaline. Jessica turned toward him, putting on a fake sad face as if she had just witnessed an unfortunate accident. She opened her arms wide to comfort her groom, expecting him to hold her tight and ask if she was okay after the scary commotion.

Jessica: Mark, honey! Thank goodness you are here! That silly maid fell right into the pool!

Mark: Get out of my way right now!

Jessica: What is your problem? Why are you screaming at me like that?
