The Officer Steps Forward

Before Evelyn or Victoria could get back on their feet, firm footsteps sounded near the entrance doors. A young United States Naval Officer in a full white dress uniform walked quickly into the main ballroom. His shoes clicked sharply against the marble with military precision. He carried a posture of sharp discipline, his dark eyes scanning the room until they landed on the scene unfolding in the center of the floor. The crowd parted quickly to let him through. He looked down at the two women sitting on the ground in their ruined pride, and then he turned his eyes to Charlotte, who was standing straight despite the red mark still visible on her cheek.

The officer reached inside his uniform jacket and pulled out a clean, cream-colored invitation card. The card featured a bright gold crest of an American eagle at the top, and bold lettering was printed neatly across the front. He looked down at the paper in his hands and then looked up at Charlotte's face with a deep look of confusion and respect. He held the card out toward her, his voice ringing out clearly across the silent room so every single wealthy guest could hear every word.

Officer Miller: Are you Charlotte Vail?

Charlotte: Yes, sir. I am Charlotte Vail.

Officer Miller: The personal guest of honor invited directly by the Chief of Naval Operations?

Charlotte: That is correct. I brought the original foundation records as requested.

Evelyn: What? That is impossible! She is a nobody! She has no money and no status!

Victoria: Officer, there must be a mistake! She is just an intruder who snuck in through the back door!

Officer Miller turned his head slowly and looked down at Victoria with a cold, strict glare that instantly silenced her. He adjusted his military hat and turned back to Charlotte, stepping forward to hand her the gold-embossed card. He then bent down, picked up her spilled paper folders from the floor, and handed them back to her with total respect. The wealthy guests in the room began to murmur loudly among themselves. The tone of the room changed in an instant. The people who had been laughing at Charlotte moments ago were now looking at her with wide eyes, realizing that the young woman in dark jeans was the most important person in the building tonight.
