Victoria grabbed her mother's arm, her hands trembling as she looked around at the guests who were now staring at them with total coldness. The same wealthy people who had shared drinks with them an hour ago were now stepping back, shaking their heads in disgust. Victoria tried to step toward Charlotte, her eyes full of panic and desperate anger.
Victoria: Charlotte, please! We are family! You cannot do this to us in front of everyone!
Charlotte: You did not treat me like family when you threw my clothes onto the driveway two years ago.
Evelyn: We gave you a roof over your head for years after your mother died!
Charlotte: My father gave me a home. You took it away the moment his heart stopped beating.
Officer Miller: That is enough. Security, please step forward and escort these two ladies out of the building.
Two tall hotel security guards in black suits walked quickly across the floor and placed their hands on Evelyn and Victoria's arms. Victoria tried to pull her arm away, but the guard held her firmly. Evelyn looked down at her red Gucci handbag and her silver dress, her pride completely shattered in front of hundreds of influential people. As the guards led them toward the grand double doors, the guests turned away from them, leaving a clear path for their exit. The loud clicking of their heels against the marble floor was the only sound left as they were marched out into the cold night air where police cruisers were already waiting near the entrance.
Charlotte took a long, deep breath. The weight that had been resting on her chest for two years finally lifted away. She reached out and took the legal folder from Mr. Harrison's hand, placing it safely inside her simple canvas tote bag. The clothes she wore did not define who she was, and she no longer needed approval from people who valued money over basic human decency.
Mr. Harrison: You did your father proud tonight, Charlotte. His legacy is safe now because you never gave up.
Charlotte: Thank you, Mr. Harrison. I just wanted his true wishes to be honored.
Officer Miller: The stage is ready for you, Miss Vail. The board is waiting to hear your opening speech for the foundation.
Charlotte smiled softly and nodded her head. She turned away from the entrance and walked toward the front of the room, her head held high, ready to take her rightful place as the leader her father always knew she would become.
