The afternoon sun poured through the high arch windows of the coastal estate, casting long golden rectangles across the polished white marble foyer. It was supposed to be a quiet gathering before the annual charity gala. Marcus pulled his black tuxedo jacket tighter around his shoulders as he adjusted his bowtie in the hallway mirror. Everything about his life seemed perfectly ordered from the outside. He was a successful real estate investor, happily married to Vanessa, and waiting for the arrival of his younger sister Clara. Clara was seven months pregnant and had traveled across the state to stay with them for the weekend.
Suddenly, a sharp cry shattered the quiet peace of the house. It was followed by a heavy, sickening thud against the hard marble floor. Marcus froze in the hallway, his heart slamming against his ribs. He turned and sprinted toward the main entrance. When he slammed open the heavy white double doors, the scene before him stopped the blood in his veins. Clara was curled up on her side at the base of the grand staircase, clutching her stomach and sobbing in agony. Standing just inches away from her was Vanessa, wearing a striking red dress, looking down with a strange, cold expression.
Marcus: Clara! Oh God, Clara, what happened?
Marcus dropped to his knees beside his sister, his hands trembling as he checked her face. Clara was gasping for air, her face pale and covered in cold sweat. She reached out and grabbed Marcus by his sleeve, her fingernails digging deep into the soft fabric of his jacket. She couldn't speak through her tears, only moaning in deep pain while holding her swollen abdomen.
Vanessa: Honey, she fell on her own and you're trying to frame me!
Vanessa's voice echoed loudly in the tall room. She dropped to her knees on the opposite side, pointing an angry finger down at Clara while shouting defensively. Her red dress spilled across the white floor like a bright stain. Marcus looked back and forth between his pregnant sister on the ground and his wife of three years. Vanessa's eyes were wide, her breathing heavy, but her words sounded rushed and rehearsed, like she was fighting off an accusation nobody had even made yet.
Marcus: I didn't say a word to you yet, Vanessa. Why are you shouting?
Vanessa: Because I know how you look at me! You always side with your family!
Marcus felt a cold wave of suspicion washing over him. Clara was always careful, especially since her pregnancy was considered high risk. She never wore high heels and always held the wooden handrail whenever she used the stairs. Looking down at Clara's foot, Marcus saw her simple flat shoe still tucked neatly on the step above where she lay. It looked as if she had been grabbed or blocked before she reached the bottom landing.
Clara: Marcus... she pushed... she wouldn't let me pass...
Clara managed to whisper the words before another surge of pain squeezed her eyes shut. Vanessa gasped loudly, taking a fast step backward in her high heels, her hands covering her mouth in exaggerated shock. She shook her head rapidly, her diamond earrings catching the bright sunlight.
Vanessa: She's lying to you! She tripped on her own dress! I tried to catch her, Marcus, I swear I tried to save her!
Marcus stood up slowly. His mind was racing, trying to make sense of the sudden chaos. He loved his wife, but the fear in Clara's voice sounded terrifyingly real. He looked down at the white marble floor, then back at Vanessa's red dress. Something felt deeply wrong about the entire scene, and the heavy silence of the large foyer began to weigh down on him like a crushing weight.
