Marcus felt a sick feeling rise in his chest as the video loop finished playing. He leaned back in his leather chair, staring at the frozen image of his wife shoving his pregnant sister. The reality of what he had just witnessed felt like a physical blow to his chest. He turned his head slowly to look at Vanessa, who was staring down at the floorboards near the office doorway, refusing to look at the monitor.
Marcus: You pushed her. You watched her fall and then you lied straight to my face while she was bleeding on the floor.
Vanessa: She was going to ruin everything, Marcus! You don't understand what she told me up there!
Marcus: What could she possibly say to make you put her life and her unborn baby's life in danger?
Vanessa took a step into the office, her voice dropping to an angry, sharp whisper. The sweet, innocent tone was completely gone, replaced by a bitter rage that Marcus had never seen before in all their years together.
Vanessa: She found out about the offshore account! She was going to tell you about the estate money I moved last month!
Marcus stared at her in total disbelief. Over the past year, he had noticed small accounting irregularities in the family trust fund, but he had assumed it was simple bank delays. He never suspected that his own wife had been systematically moving funds out of his estate into her personal offshore accounts. Clara had been helping him review the family inheritance papers earlier that week, which meant she must have uncovered the missing paper trail.
Marcus: You tried to hurt my sister over money? Over a trust fund?
Vanessa: It was my security! You put everything in your family's name, Marcus! I was just taking what belonged to me before you gave it all to her and her baby!
Marcus: You are sick, Vanessa. You are completely sick.
Marcus stood up from his desk, grabbing his car keys and his phone. He walked over to the desk printer, hit print on the saved video clip, and pulled out a fresh flash drive to download the full, unedited video file from the security system hard drive. Vanessa rushed forward, trying to grab his arm to stop him.
Vanessa: Don't do this! If you take that video to the police, my life is over! We can fix this inside the family!
Marcus: Touch me again and I will have the security guard standing at the front gate remove you right now. Get out of my way.
He pulled his arm back forcefully, glaring at her with total disgust. Vanessa shrank back, her red dress rustling as she hit the side of the doorway. Marcus saved the file, pocketed the flash drive, and walked past her out into the bright foyer, leaving her alone in the quiet house with the evidence still glowing on the computer screen.
